Tips on Coupon Ettiquette

03 Mar

Deals do come back around.

As new couponers, sometimes we see deals that seem too good to be true.  To be able to walk into a store, pick up several items and walk out without paying, or paying pennies on the dollar may make you feel as though you may never see that deal again, so you suddenly get excited and decide you need more of that item…lots more.  I understand.

Many of us have gotten caught up in the frenzy of getting as much for free as possible, before the next guy comes in and takes it.  One thing I have learned over the past month or so, is that the same, or similar deal does come back around.  There really is no reason to ever clear a shelf.  Now, if there are 2 items left, and you have 2 coupons, and would really like them, then by all means, buy them.  Just don’t get sucked into the trap of becoming a hoarder, for hoarders sake.

We at The Katy Coupon Zone are Ladies and Gentlemen.  Please remember that we are out to save money, not cripple our ability and as of now, our freedom to coupon.  It has been brought to my attention that Walgreens has now limited the amount of BOGO’s, RR and Free items to one per day per household in some areas.

Thank you all for staying courteous shoppers and using Coupon Etiquette on every shopping trip. Please feel free to add a comment or question.  I will do my best to answer.

Thank you for visiting The Katy Coupon Zone, blogged from Katy, TX…a.k.a…God’s Country!  Happy Couponing and…stay in the ZONE!

Most of the times when there's a great deal with coupons going on..I go to get it and the shelves are cleared…….It is hard to find the right time to go and get it…….I live in Katy….It seems that here everyone is couponing….bye

THANK YOU for saying this. I wish everyone felt the way you did. I've never cleared a shelf (unless there was only 2 or 3 on it) and find it senseless to do that. It's not nice and hard on EVERYONE. I think you're right. People get caught up in the good deal and "shelf-clearing" is what they see on TV, so they think it must be okay. I think the phrase "Just because you can doesn't mean you should" applies here.

Update: As of right now, it seems as though we are not being limited in Katy. Please Ladies and Gentlemen, let's keep it that way! Just say No to Hoarding! Have fun in The Katy Coupon Zone!

I agree. It is frustrating to finally be able to get over to the store to get an iteam – even on Sunday and they are all gone. I missed stopping at CVS and Walgreens yesterday and when I went today everything was gone 😦 I heard the term "Coupon Ninja" from one person today.

It can be this way in Canada as well although we don’t have the ability to stack like some in the USA or else we would have the some problem. I believe in Vancouver they can stack at London Drugs though. There are certain times when an item is out of stock but for the most part we just get a rain check. It’s hard to say it was a hoarder as it could have been a hoard of people, who knows.

At the end of the day there are fewer people that will think of others and only think of their own family. I agree to set limits and save some for the next guy, same goes with couponers who take entire pads of coupons. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around it but it can turn into an addiction if one is not careful.

When we were new couponers we were anxious as well when we noticed a great deal. This has all passed now. It seems the more you learn the better you get at understanding. Even though you use coupons and save money it doesn’t mean you are living with-in your means. We still spent more than we needed to each month on groceries. We learned just because we have a coupon we don’t need to use it. We don’t need to pay tax on crap we won’t use or will sit on a shelf for 10 years.

All that extra money can be saved or invested for the future. Now we still coupon but just not to the extent we used to. We tend to share our coupons with others and the excitement has settled. It’s hard not to get caught up though. If you use everything you buy then by all means do what you need to do. We can’t control the populations decisions without limits or policies, they can only control themselves.

You are so right. Spending just to spend, hoarding for hoarding sake and taking up valuable real estate in our homes for unnecessary items is a waste. I’m glad you are here. I like your style.

Cheers Patti! I’ve learned over the past couple of years. The pounding excitement has died off now.
