Stock Pilers BEWARE…Boll Weevils in my Pasta!


Hey gang, I have had the most rude awakening this week.  I pulled out a box of pasta, and noticed a little pile of what looked like powder on my shelf.  It was about a teaspoon full, right in front of the box.  My first thought was the kids must have spilled flour and didn’t clean it up, then I opened the box.  The pasta was full of holes, and little black specks.  Then I saw it move!!  After getting completely grossed out, I quickly dumped it into the garbage disposal and chopped that garbage up, bugs and all. Now after a few minutes of research, I found that the bugs were boll weevils.  BOLL WEEVILS!  In my clean beautiful pantry!  I have no idea how they got there, other than they must have been in the package already. So, now I have to treat my entire pantry as if it has been infested, and check EVERYTHING!  So, you will not see any posts from me today, other than the one I found on eHow, regarding Boll Weevils and how to avoid them as well as get rid of them.  This is going to take quite some time, because I have a rather large pantry…well, two rather large pantry’s. Now I’m going to have to do research on long term storage for the food I purchase.  Any pointers?

Weevils infest grains, eat them and lay their eggs in them. These weevils are very small, so you may not even notice their presence. You must throw away any food contaminated by weevils. If you regularly inspect your pantry and keep it clean, you can avoid future weevil infestations.

Help Needed in the Kitchen!


I am stuck in the kitchen!

I have thawed out hamburger for dinner tonight.  I would love to make Spaghetti and Meatballs, but I don’t have a good meatball recipe.  Can any one out there help me out??

Cooking Dinner Straight From the Pantry (day 3)


As you may have noticed, I did not post about dinner last night. I was at my very part-time job, so my honey ordered pizza for the kids.  So tonight I am back on track!

I decided to thaw out a 5# chuck roast yesterday before I left for work.  I set it in the fridge, and rediscovered it this morning.  When I pulled it out of the fridge, the harsh reality hit me, that I have NO IDEA how to prepare and cook this meat.  So, I asked my good friend and chef, Fiona Layton to hook me up with a recipe.  She is super fabulous, and sent me to her Group Recipes site.  You can find her page HERE.

So what’s on the menu??

Main dish: Herb-Crusted Chuck Roast

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried savory
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
  • 1 (3 pound) boneless chuck eye or top blade
  • SAUCE:
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. In a bowl, combine the first seven ingredients. Rub over entire roast. Place on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Bake, uncovered, at 325 degrees F for 1-1/2 to 2 hours or until meat is tender and reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a meat thermometer should read 145 degrees F; medium, 160 degrees F; well-done, 170 degrees F). Let stand 10 minutes before carving.
  2. Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine the sauce ingredients. Serve with the roast.

Side dish: Maple Dill Carrots

Ingredients

3 cups peeled and sliced carrots
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

1.    Place carrots in a skillet and pour in just enough water to cover.
2.    Bring to a boil over medium heat.
3.    Simmer until water has evaporated and the carrots are tender.
4.    Stir in butter, brown sugar, dill, salt and pepper.

I just found one more side dish I want to add. Pineapple Fried Rice!  It looks amazing.

Cooking Straight From the Pantry (day 2)


Tonight…Pig…It’s what’s on the menu.

Last hunting season, my Honey decided to finally kill a pig.  Yayyy…Pig.  Well, I have been pretty lax in preparing it, so tonight is the night.  Wild pork has a bit of a gamey taste, so I need to season it very well.  Wish me luck! (any pointers on good ways to prepare wild pig would be extremely welcome!)

Main dish: Pan seared Pork Steaks, seasoned with Oklahomas Own All Purpose Seasoning and sauteed in green onions and red bell peppers. Drizzled with Mosto Arancia White Grape mist and Orange infused vinegar.

Side dish:  Rotini Pasta with Philadelphia Cooking Creme Savory Garlic

Veggie:  Spring mix salad with croutons

Dessert: Ice Cream

We will see how the family likes this one tonight.  Last night went pretty well, no left overs is always a good sign. Whats for dinner at your home tonight?
